What is your Christmas day meal this year?

We are having roast goose with roast spuds and veg. Then the usual Christmas pudding, Christmas cake and mince pies. There will be 8 of us.

    Chris.

Re: What is your Christmas day meal this year?

We still haven't figured it out yet.

Normally we do Prime Rib, but this year we want to do something different. Maybe duck. But we have recently gotten hooked on Korean cooking and are thinking of small birds cooked in broth or a Korean pork roast.

Gonna hit our local Chinatown tomorrow and see what they have. Since we just watched Christmas Story last night, a "smiling" duck seems to be the consensus. Will update when the decision is made

Nice. Wanted to have goose, but in Japan that's not easy. I found one imported from France, but wasn't about to pay $250 for it.

So... We're having Peking Duck! :-)

Steve and I are going to be joined by my nephew and his family for Christmas Day -- they are coming for a week from Virginia. I debated about having lamb or pork, but finally decided I would stick to an old standby -- turkey -- given the number of people (seven) including kids. There will be brussel sprouts (of course), carrots, potatoes, and lots of stuffing, plus pies. On Boxing Day KiltedWolfman and his family (another four) are coming over to join us, and we will be feasting on turkey soup, turkey sandwiches, and Jackson's haggis-balls. The haggis-balls are a new one for me -- Jackson (KiltedWolfman) insists they are wonderful.....we'll see. It will be interesting to see the reaction of my nephew's non-Scottish-cultured children to haggis.....

I'm so with you on the brussels sprouts. But the haggis balls.... Would those be Cairngorms Oysters??

    Turkey (I won't eat it)
    Mashed potatoes
brussels sprouts (I'll have a few)
Garlic tofu in Mushroom sauce (I will eat copious amounts)

Xmas deserts are usually too rich for me so I'll have some shortbreads if they're there or maybe a mandarin or seven.

We do it South American style on Xmas Eve and we're having a big sleep over at my Brother-In-Law's so this will be the first Xmas in the kids' lives that they won't open all their presents on Xmas Eve and they get to do it like everyone else on Xmas morning. yay!

Re: What is your Christmas day meal this year?

Our tradition is that Xmas dinner has to be a bird, and anything else is emphatically not Xmas dinner to me. No ham or ribs or WHY, they just won't do. A goose was the old tradition, i.e. in Victorian times (read Dickens' Christmas Carol if you doubt that), but we nearly always have a turkey. I prefer goose, but my wife does not.

I also have to have my Xmas pudding, what Americans usually call plum pudding, although it seldom contains any plums. My wife is more of an Xmas cake person, but I always win that one, just like she wins on the first course. We both agree that there have to be mince pies as well, so there are.

As I'm a confirmed bachelor, I haven't decided if I'm going to cook something simple for myself or go out.

We have visited relatives here in the US a couple of times and had Xmas dinner at their house. The first time we were shocked and dismayed to find they were having ham, and they do that every year. It's against the rules, you know, because ham doesn't come from a bird. Pigs don't fly yet, anyway, AFAIK.

Repeat performances were dealt with in a couple of different ways. One time I believe my wife cooked a turkey at their house for dinner on a different day, and another year we came home and cooked our own proper Xmas dinner for New Year. Probably this seems eccentric to some people, but we eat roughly the same thing every year and look forward to it a long way in advance.

For our family we'll all gather at mom and dad's house. There will be turkey, dressing (stuffing), mashed potatos, noodles, sweet potatos, cheesy carrot cassarole, corn, beans, and lots of salads and deserts. Getting hungry already!
