    Willing Curiosity

I am wanting to try Haggis, but I don't have the necessary ingredients to make it myself. The local butcher shop only sells them once a year. Also buying a whole one wouldn't be cost efective, I would be the only one eating it.

So, my question is does canned Haggis taste the same?

If you have any people who raise and butcher lamb or goat you can get the stuff to make it yourself. You may not be able to get the stomach but I use collagen sausage casings for mine. I have a Middle Eastern grocery that gets fresh goat and lamb every Friday so I can get all the good parts. I use heart, tongue, liver and kidney. Making your own allows you to make only as much as you wish and also you can slice it, vacuseal it and freeze it for later enjoyment. Included is a link to my haggis making. This year I had about 10 lbs of the offal to work with. Enjoy

Ive never tried the canned stuff so maybe someone else can clue you in on that. To me it is all about fresh, canned may lose something in flavor but Im not the expert on that.

If you can't buy a small one, do like we do - buy whatever size is available and then freeze what you don't need.
As most are microwaveable these days, you can save the 'excess', not that we have much excess with our two kids, and just cooik what you need.
Be very wary of cheaper brands - in my opinion, you really do get what you pay for - we tried a cheaper one from our local supermarket that was basically liver sausage and it was foul!!!

If you cant buy haggis in Colorado or on line in the USA, there are Scottish/UK companies who ship haggis overseas. you don't need a big haggis, one about 1lb is plenty big enough to feed 3 or 4 people. Don't forget the bashed neeps and champit tatties, for the full experience.

Think I'll text the wife to pick one up, I'm fed up with the standard Christmas fare and this has put me in the notion for a haggis. they are really good at this time of year having grazed on heather during the autumn

I've only had the canned ( made in USA, so you can probably find on-line) vegetarian Haggis, but we ate it ( heated-up) at a local Robbie Burns night supper, alongside a locally made 'traditional' Haggis - the vegetarian was quite good! Actually not as dry , as the meaty one.

I found on the Celtic Croft website the other day that they sell haggis

    http://www.kilts-n-stuff.com/scottish-gifts/

Other supporting vendors probably offer it too.

You could of course have your own burns supper...

I've enjoyed the link haggis available from Lamb Etc., out of Roseburg, Oregon. Makes for a nice breakfast entree.
