    XMarks military members

I was showing the site to a friend today and he mentioned that there seemed to be a rather inordinate amount of current/former military members here as compared to the population at large. So, out of curiosity, how many members here are/were in their respective country's military?

I spent 12 years in the USMC

USAF Tactcal Air Command, 4501 CPUSS from 1979-1983. (prior to that, 17 years as a military brat)
"A veteran, whether active duty, retired, national guard or reserve, is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to "The United States of America", for an amount of "up to and including my life." That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country who no longer understand it." anon

I spent five years as a Hospital Corpsman in the United States Navy.

I wonder if the proportion your friend noticed is a cause or an effect? That is, are we drawn to kilts because they appeal to the same things that military service appeals to -- loyalty, tradition, etc -- or because people with the heritage to appreciate kilts have a tendancy to come from families with a tradition of service? Both my fathers, and all three of my grandfathers served. In my generation, I served, and my brother didn't.

No reserve duties, because I joined the police force in 1982 (quit in 1992...seen enough violence and missery).
