    Yuletide greetings!

    Happy winter solstice to anyone that celebrates it...

    And for those of you that don't you might want to try and figure out what happens when the mayan calendar runs out at the end of the year...

    Oh well off to add another log to the fire...

    Merry Midwinter to you.

    Re: Yuletide greetings!

    I attended a very nice wine and food pairing tonight, in celebration of the solstice. The goddess should have been pleased; the food as very good, and the wine was excellent!

    If the world is really going to end when the Mayan calendar runs out, there isn't a damn thing we can do about it, so there is no point in worrying about it! Party
    while you can, or cower in fear, whatever makes you feel good about it!

    That sounds nice. No wine here, but I was able to save a small amount of pomegranate juice from an earlier harvest, and mix it with some of my citrus as a drink. This was along with a kind of yogurt based filling wrapped in the last of the grape leaves from my garden. Not at all a feast, but nice.

    A couple of my family members have brought it up, but if it isn't one thing it's another.

    Pretty much how I feel... Kind of like my 2011 calendar is about to expire... I guess some enterprising mayan figured he could save himself from being sacrificed "i'll just do another month..."

    Re: Yuletide greetings!

    I'll share my favorite Winter Solstice poem, "The Shortest Day" by Susan Cooper:

    And so the Shortest Day came and the year died
    And everywhere down the centuries of the snow-white world
    Came people singing, dancing,
    To drive the dark away.
    They lighted candles in the winter trees;
    They hung their homes with evergreen;
    They burned beseeching fires all night long
    To keep the year alive.
    And when the new year’s sunshine blazed awake
    They shouted, revelling.
    Through all the frosty ages you can hear them
    Echoing behind us – listen!
    All the long echoes, sing the same delight,
    This Shortest Day,
    As promise wakens in the sleeping land:
    They carol, feast, give thanks,
    And dearly love their friends,
    And hope for peace.
    And now so do we, here, now,
    This year and every year.
    Welcome Yule!
    "It's all the same to me, war or peace,
    I'm killed in the war or hung during peace."
