Brobdingnagian Bards
Does anybody know this band? The Brobdingnagian Bards? I've downloaded a few of their songs because people have told me how awesome they are, but I just don't hear it...frankly, they sound boring, and the auto harp is...well...I dunno, I'm not a fan. Am I missing something? Why are they so popular? His singing isn't really great and it's just the same auto harp and penny whistle in every song. They just sound so, I dunno, bland to me.
What do you guys think?

They're alright, but nothing spectacular. I did hear some songs I'd never heard before through them though, so they've given me some stuff to try and find by other bands.
I prefer Blackthorn over them. I'm a little biased as one of the members was a teacher at my high school when I first started listening to them. They are a good local to Detroit Irish Folk Band.

I really like them. They were the first traditional celtic band I heard, though, so I'm biased. However, I do think they're better live than on CD.

They are ok. I like the "irish and Celtic Music Podcast" put out by one of their members, Marc Gunn. http://bellobard.libsyn.com/rss It features more than just their music.

I subscribe to Song Henge. I like a lot of the bands that Marc showcases. The Bard's music is sometimes good but often a little redundant and I could do without the talking during the songs that is supposed to be entertaining. I just find it annoying. I think they have a niche audience of "cat song" people.

I saw Blackthorn at Irish Fest this year, and they were fantastic! I wouldn't compare them to the Bards, seeing as how the Bards are more Renaissance-y and Blackthorn plays pub ballads (the best of all ballads, if you as me).

I listened to some Brobdingnagian Bards today as a matter of fact, and I have to say i wasn't blown away. It was okay, but it didn't "boil my haggis".

I've been listening to Marc's Irish & Celtic Music podcast mentioned above since this thread first came up. I've really come to appreciate his sense of humor (its twisted in the same direction as mine). I really like some of the parody songs he comes up with. Like Emerald Rose's Danny in the jar. I also like The Bard's version of Seven Drunken Nights.
As such, today I bought Emerald Rose's "Con Suite" and The Bard's (I don't like trying to type Brobdingnagian) "The Holy Grail of Irish Drinking Songs".
I've heard better bands but these two are FUN bands.
Boil my Haggis indeed. :food-smiley-002:

Never heard of them - perhaps they are less giants on the music scene and more Lilliputian?

I totally agree...the Bards are a "fun" band and probably better appreciated live.
