I'm recording an album!
So, I've been doing some hard thinking about what to get my girlfriend for Christmas and her birthday (a bit of a ways off, but I like to be prepared), and I struck upon the idea that singing some love songs to her would be cool, except for the fact that it would only last as long as I would sing to her.
I then thought that I could make a recording of myself singing, and give that to her. I then remembered that I have no talent at making music (be it an instrument of computer generated - and I won't violate copyright laws), and I don't have a microphone or anything.
I was about to go one to another idea, when I remembered that my friend (the Uilleann piper - I posted a link a while back) happens to run a small shoestring budget recording studio out of his dorm (or somewhere over there) at Point Loma University in San Diego. I also remembered that he is a music composition major, and that he has Finale and all that, and knows how to use them.
A few e-mails later, and he agreed to arrange music for some songs I'd picked out, as well as compose music to go with lyrics I came up with, and I could come down in four or five weeks to record the vocals.
So, end result: I am recording an album! And (hopefully) Amanda will love it! And if not, I'll sell it and make money! It's win-win!

What a brave new world we live in.
I recorded myself a while ago, I'm not good enough to go into production but it was fun to take my voice, singing Carrickfergus, and add two tracks of my voice to it. One was twisted to sound like Elmer Fudd and the other was like Johnny Cash (in my dreams).
There's a lot you can do.
I have two different friends who have put together decent albums that really are nothing more than vanity albums. Both are really quite good.
I've started playing around with singing and playing on video. It's a good learning method. You could build sound and picture and create your own dvd. It's not that hard to get a decent image and sound. Your buddy can probably edit all that.

Hmmm… perhaps I could make it a dual disc (one side is a dvd, the other a CD), and put on a music video or something… possibilities, possibilities.
Anyhoo, for those interested, these are the songs that'll be on the album:
1: Heart and Soul
2: Red is the Rose/Loch Lomond
3: The Braes O' Balquihidder
4: Black is the Colour
5: My Love is Like a Red, Red Rose
6: My original song (lyrics by me, music by my friend)
If I know Greg at all (and I do), he'll probably put on an instrumental track. I'm thinking reading "O' A' The Airts The Wind Can Blaw" during part of it.

If she dosent love it...time to move on. If I gave my wife a cd of me farting Christmas carols, she'd love it simply because it came form me.
By the way, my new cd, "Shawn farts Christmas Carols" is now available on iTunes and CD Baby! (LOL)
She'll love it dude, stop worrying

Go for it! She will appreciate the time and effort you put into it! You'll also give her a reason to say that she loved you before you became famous

Congrats on being brave enough to but yourself out there for love. Although I guess I shouldn't be surprised that a guy who wears kilts has no fear!
I hope the CD comes out great for you. Keep us updated.
