    RANT- Wicked Tinkers Latest Album

At the Woodland Games a stop by the Wicked Tinkers' tent and attendance at at least one show wasn't an option-It was a MUST!

Their long awaited CD "RANT" was finally available and of course we bought one.

It is very good, the production values are high. Unlike the boisterous "Whiskey Supper" and "Bangers for Breakfast" this is a studio album. It lacks some of the high energy of previous albums and at first I wasn't as thrilled with it. With repeated listenings it is growing on me and I'm beginning to appreciate that they are expanding their musical territory.

Has any one else bought it and would like to share their thoughts?

    Cheers

    Jamie

Bought it online a few weeks ago. I especially like the song "Donald MacGillivary". Yes this is a big departure from their normal live party songs and took me by surprise the first listening. It makes it easier to hear their true musical abilities come through.

The didgeridoo solo song was cool. Paraphrasing the great Bruce Dickinson "I'll be honest.. fellas, it was sounding great. But.. I could've used a little more Didgeridoo.
So.. let's take it again.. and, Gene.... That.. that doesn't work for me. I gotta have more Didgeridoo!!"

    I like this CD, too.

Can't wait to see them again at the Livermore games this weekend!

It's certainly a larger spectrum than previous albums. Liked the vocals, especially "The Hog" and "MacFarlane's Lantern."

"A Piper's Christmas"? It has a title after all!

    Thumbs up Rant

I like it, yes its different but thats good. They really do seem to be stretching the boundaries and thats a good thing. I was most surprised with the amount of vocals on this album. The didgeridoo solo was requested a number of times by some of my band students when they heard it one day as I was setting up the room.

I just heard the Wicked Tinkers for the first time on Celtic Pub Radio on Live 365. I heard two of their songs, and being a fan of both Albannach and Brother, I couldn't help but love what I heard. It' somewhere in between the two- tribal, aggressive drumming, and a didjeriedoo (or however you spell it!) So what is the rest of their stuff like? Is it the same kind of almost tribal sounding music that I heard in those two songs?

Never mind- I just looked them up on YouTube. Yeah, I need to buy a CD or three from these guys.

I picked up a set of Wicked Tinkers CDs a couple of weeks ago. I agree Rant seems different from the first couple of albums, but I enjoyed them all. MacFarlane's Lantern was probably my favorite tune. I'm sorry I discovered the band as I was leaving California and never got to see them play. Hopefully, they'll play the southeast at some point.

I was lucky enough to find "Rant" for sale under Larry Monroe's banner for "Celtic Music USA" at the Houston Highland Games & Celtic Festival in mid-May. I immediately liked the roster of mainly traditional tunes mixed with some new. I think this CD was best recorded in studio. The tunes are more somber and set a different mood than a live performance of dance tunes. WT's version of Donald MacGillvray was EXCELLENT! This CD reminds me of my visit to Dunadd and the burial cists (especially the one near Polltaloch) at Kilmartin. Spooky, eerie.

Sadly, Larry has decided to retire from selling CDs at the Highland games and festivals and will only sell via the Internet and wholesale. He was a great source of CDs new and obscure. And, he was everywhere! I would go to Long's Peak Highland Games in Estes Park, CO, and there he was. I went to the SFO games and there he was. I would go to Salado Highland games and there he was. My apologies to those who remember Larry at the Albuquerque event because I got him to give that one up to come to Houston instead.

Live365 is GREAT! In Houston, we have no station that plays Celtic music 100% of the time.

Am I the only one who doesn't care for the didgeridoo/bagpipe combo?
