Some sad news in the world of Celtic Music- Liam Clancy died yesterday.
One of my all time favorites-A wonderful singer, story teller, entertainer. He and his brothers with Tommy Makem were the Grand Dadies of Celtic Music !

He and his group changed the look and style of American culture when they broke out into the public eye on the Ed Sullivan Show.
I heard NPR playing the parting glass song for him, as it was his farewell song to his own brothers when they passed.

Reason: corrected the name of the song

Read about it this morning in the paper and while not surprised was saddened, just as I was when Tommy Maken died two years ago. I love their music and was priviledged to attend one of their concerts in 1983. I was kilted and when they saw me they made a joke about this being an Irish concert - all in good fun before they played a Scottish tune.
The world is less with their going.

The first Celtic music I ever heard was Him and his brothers. I've loved it ever since. This truly saddens me.

The Parting Glass
Of all the money that e'er I spent
I've spent it in good company
And all the harm that ever I did
Alas it was to none but me
And all I've done for want of wit
To memory now I can't recall
So fill to me the parting glass
Good night and joy be with you all
If I had money enough to spend
And leisure to sit awhile
There is a fair maid in the town
That sorely has my heart beguiled
Her rosy cheeks and ruby lips
I own she has my heart enthralled
So fill to me the parting glass
Good night and joy be with you all
Oh, all the comrades that e'er I had
They're sorry for my going away
And all the sweethearts that e'er I had
They'd wish me one more day to stay
But since it falls unto my lot
That I should rise and you should not
I'll gently rise and softly call
Good night and joy be with you all

What a loss ...he will be sorely missed, and long remembered . One of the best, most inspiring balladeers I've ever heard.
Some part of me, tho, doesn't want to be sad...rather, a wake, and "like the Mary Ellen Carter, rise again!" For all we might despair at his passing, I'll prefer to celebrate the gift of music he gave the world.

Sad, the last brother is gone, Glasgow theatres were packed when they played there in the 60's. RIP
