    Tartan Terrors

I have heard from a few friends that this group is the East Coast answer to The Wicked Tinkers. Having just watched the Tinkers in Madras, Oregon I was wonderign how they compare and what people's thoughts were. The Tinkers put on an excellent show and I bought 3 of thier cds. I checked the TT webpage and found them to be a bit tamer.

    Thoughts?

They seem to be two bands with different styles. TT seems more along the lines of 'music theater' or a troupe, with WT more of a band. I always thought Tartanic was much more akin to the Wicked Tinkers.

    Still its all good.

They are compared to the Wicked Tinkers? Nothing that I've heard from either is even similar! I'd say the Tartan Terrors are more the Celtic answer to Wierd Al Yankovich, myself. They are more of a folk type band with a messed up sense of humor (get on You Tube and look up Scotland Depraved!).

I can see why they would be called that. They are a bagpipe fronted band in most cases, but seem to mix in other songs with their piping a little more so than the Tinkers (from what I've seen), and they have a dance instructor on staff. Having just heard the Tinkers music and not seen their shows, I don't know if the do the "skits" like the TT do (Scottish Bells, evolution of the kilt, etc...), and their guitar player has a slew of his own folk songs that he plays. TT do have a spectacular piper though. Based on what I've heard from both, I prefer TT and personally find their jokes a bit funnier (based on CDs only). I do really like Tinker's version of Farewell to Nova Scotia though...

Look for them on the first Friday in September at the Greenlane Irish / Scottish Festival outside Philly. They will be performing the opening night only, along with the Loch Rannoch Pipe Band.
