    Thanks for the invite, Mark!
Well, I'll be packing up the dogs and driving east to Dallas on 17-SEP, but alas, already committed to a party. So near but yet so far. SIGH.

The Saturday nite coffee klatch near Tyler sounds fun, but that's pretty damn far. How large a gathering you think that would be? It's not so cheap to drive a 10 hr round trip these days.

And I just have to ask, having once lived in East Texas, ...... just how far into the woods is this place and will I need a magic axe to find my way back safe from gramma's house?

The Sept. 17 concert is being advertised on the TSF Yahoo group (the group owner, Connie Ener, is also on the SCMA & NTIF boards). http://groups.yahoo.com/group/TexasScottishFestival

Another event for the wearing of the kilt just got posted:

DENTON DANCERS HOST CELTIC SOCIAL DANCE
DENTON, Texas - Hitch up your kilts and lace up your ghillies, the
Denton Celtic Dancers and the Dallas Irish Dance Club invite the
public, ages 13 and up, to attend a Celtic Social Dance (Ceilidh/Ceili)!

    When: Saturday, September 10, 2005, 7 pm - 10:30 pm (come at 6:30
if you need to walk the dances)

Where: Senior Center, Denton, Texas, 509 N. Bell Avenue, Denton,
    TX

Who: Dancers! (Scottish Country Dancers, Irish dancers, Contra
    Dancers...)

Sponsors: Denton Celtic Dancers and the Irish Dance Club

    Music: Lone Star Ceili Band

    Cost: $6 ($3 for students)

    Refreshments provided

The event features a live band and refreshments. Celtic dress is not
required, but attendees are definitely welcome to don appropriate
regalia if they desire, and comfortable, soft-soled shoes are highly
recommended. Called a Ceilidh or Ceili (pronounced KAY-lee), respectively in
Scotland or Ireland, the dance will feature a mix of Scottish and Irish. The
dancers will offer a 30-minute class at 6:30 to review some of the dances, and some time during the dance is reserved for demonstrations (solo
or groups, less than 2 minutes please).

I don't know if we can make either of these. We will definitely be at the Smithfield Fair concert:

    Sherry,
Have you ever BEEN to West Texas? LOL... 3 hrs to Lubbock, 5 to Amarillo, 6 to El Paso, 5 to SanAntonio, 3 to Midland/Odessa, 2 to SanAngelo, 3 to Dallas/FtWorth, 6 to Texarkana, 3 to Waco, 3 to Witchita Falls, 7 to Houston....

Abilene may have 120 000 people but we are in the MIDDLE of nowhere!

And my kilted friend here just got transferred to the Pentagon, so although there are a couple of guys I see kilted for piping or special occasions, I'm the only guy at the pub. Gets old. (But I have a few on the fence 'converts' I'm working on. heh, heh)

Besides, getting in a car and driving to a social event every month or two is pretty much Standard Op. for us out here. Networking is the norm.

Anybody else here from the edge of the world?

    Sherry,

Thanks for mentioning these other events! (I had planned on mentioning them, but they got lost in the editing.)

I plan to go to the Denton Celtic Dancers Ceilidh tomorrow night, and hope to get to the Smithfield concert also, but it's not certain yet.

    Regards,
    Mark

Yeah, Scotty, I've been in that general direction--but I was always just passing through! One time on my way to Taos, the other times to Colorado. :-) We camped at Palo Duro Canyon, & that place is so beautiful it makes me cry.

We are going to the Smithfield Fair concert Friday night, & all my men will be kilted! There will be quite a few other kilted men there, as well. Any of you guys going to be there? I'd love to meet you & introduce you around.

I'm more a beach and woods guy myself. Palo Duro just makes me think of dust storms and being thirsty. LOL

<--------jealous SIGH. Unfortunately, my Monday night class got resched'd to Friday this week, so while you guys are having fun, I'll be nose in book and listening to student presentations. GROAN. Wish I could be there, but maybe next time round.

    We'll miss you.

It looks like SF may very well have to have someone from the community put them up--we have so many evacuees here SF's accomodations are iffy.
