    Another Pennsylvanian

Hey. I am new to this kilts and can't wait to get started. I went to the festival in Bethlehem, PA last year and saw all the UK's and AK's which looked great but I am more interested in something more traditional looking. From what I read here Stillwater is a good buy-in value and the black heavyweight looks supremely cool. I want to know about kilts for sport wear. I hike and play soccer. Any suggestions are appreciated. Cheers.

Welcome aboard. Stillwater's are a great way to start with kilts. I've got four myself. Now I'm working on adding some wool traditionals to my collection (talk about $$$).

For hiking you may want to check out Freedom Kilts and Pittsburgh kilts. Great quality and function. If weight is an issue playing soccer then you may want to peek at sport kilt for something your not going to have to worry about messing up. Hope that helps you get rolling.

If you want to stay more traditional looking (ie. tartan) USA kilts and Bear and Stillwater are the place to go.

    Thanks

Thanks for all the quick replies. The price is a huge issue. I obivously don't want to wear something on a hike that I paid a couple of hundred bucks for. Another silly question but is the sporran an optional accessory or is it totally necessary? If so, any recommendations about a relatively cheap model.

I always wear one of my Stillwater standards when I hike anymore. They work fine, although they are as hot as anything else when the temperature climbs. Although it completes the "look", sporrans are not completely necessary, but are a great substitute for a pocket when you don't have any others (like with a Stillwater). Stillwater does have a couple of inexpensive sporrans, as do most other kilt sites.
