Beginning a Journey in Tampa, FL
Hello all! I have always admired the looks of a kilt on men (and women, but in an entirely different manner, if you know what I mean.) However, I have never felt myself appropriate to wear one, as I was never made aware of any Scottish or Irish heritage, nor was I raised with a kilt in the house. As much as I loved them, I was afraid to wear a kilt in the fear that I would be offending or insulting a clan or family by donning their tartan.
However, after my girlfriend told me just recently that she'd like to see me in a kilt, I decided to do a little research and discovered that not only are family tartans commonly worn outside of their respective families, but there are universal "fashion" kilts for those who just love kilts. I was thrilled with the news and decided to give my mother and father the news that their boy is "goin' brogue from the waist down", and only then did my mother tell me that I have a strong Scottish bloodline, and my father informed me that most of his father's side was from Wales.
So, after doing some snooping around XmarkstheScot, I decided that I will, when funds allow, likely be getting myself a casual kilt kit from USAkilts.com. Of course, I have a lot of research to still do, as I'd like to find out if my family has a tartan that USAkilts has in stock; I need to get all of my measurements (and I must do that after my exercise binge for the summer and fall); and I just want to make sure I do everything right before I take the plunge.
With that said, I'm very much looking forward to enjoying my travels in a free flowing kilt (especially since I walk everywhere, car-free in the Sunshine State), hoping to find a way to proudly display both of my parent's heritage while still paving my own way for my future descendants to look upon with pride and a touch of "wow, our great-grandfather was a crazyman, that must be where WE get it from."
I look forward to talking with all of you and having you share my journey of discovery and fashion, no matter how off-kilter it is.

Welcome from the other side of the bay in St. Pete!
If you are ever curious on the construction of a USAK - I have two of them, a casual and a semi-trad (which I adore). I'll keep you in the loop for the next kilt night we have and you can join in on the fun.
Have fun and throw far. In that order, too. - o1d_dude

Hello WC,
Welcome to XMarks from the other side of the Atlantic in Norfolk, England.
Why not get all your relatives and all your friends to club together and buy you one present for your birthday, or Christmas or whatever - a kilt.
Regards
Chas
