    Central Wisconsin Kilter

Good evening! Long time lurker, first time poster… I’m readying myself to jump into the rabble in the very near future and want to take the time to introduce myself.

My name is BJ and I'm a dad, husband, geek, hunter, camper, and canoer. My family and I live in Central Wisconsin where we live on our own little funny farm complete with horses, ponies, pigs, chickens, cats, a dog, and varied wildlife. Life is busy and I’m enjoying every minute of it.

My kilting curiosity doesn’t come directly from my heritage, but more from the look and comfort side of things. I like to challenge perceptions and open people’s minds. Kilting in Central Wisconsin isn’t something you see every day and I’m not sure why. It just seems so danged comfortable. Along with this, my father’s side claims Irish heritage and so I feel a little more comfortable claiming that I’m exploring my roots and enriching my boy’s cultural awareness. All in all, I’m looking to have a little fun.

As a family man, and as most people who are young and entering the fray, I do have budget constraints; especially not knowing what exactly I’m looking for. I have a general idea, but one of the main hang-ups at this point is the acrylic versus poly (PV). I haven’t been able to find a good comparison between the two. Though I think I’ll end up donning wool eventually, I’d like to start with one of these two just to get a feel for things. So what say you? Do you have a good comparison or experience with these fabrics? What do you like/dislike about each? I’d be interested in hearing! Thanks all!

    Welcome

Welcome from a Scotsman living in the West Midlands of England.

I can't offer specialist advice on different types of material, but I'm sure there are many others who will do so. I'll follow comments with interest, as it's a subject I find quite confusing.

Thanks for the welcome! As a new member, the delay in the posting was greater than my research window. Being an avid outdoorsman, once I learned of the flammability of the acrylic, my mind was made up for me... I found many a posting on the subject and even a great video show the results of flame tests. With that said, I found a sponsor of the forum and put in my order! Finding a wonderful buckle that was unique and personal pushed me over the hump and I've officially reached the jonesing stage I'll post up photos when the kilt arrives! Cheers!

    Welcome from Central Missouri.
If you are looking to invest in a kilt of non wool origin I would steer you to PV PolyViscose as opposed to acrylic/wool. I have both and the feel and lay of the PV is nearer to wool. Acrylic will eventually pill as happens with most acrylic sweaters and thing. Stillwater kilts has some nice acrylic kilts if that is where your budget keeps you. They also have an Economy wool Black Watch kilt for under a Cnote that wears nicely. USA kilts has very nice PV kilts at a variety of price points. PV can be easily washed and worn. Perhaps you can state your size requirements, someone may have a gently used kilt they can offer to get you started.

Welcome, farraway. You made the right choice going with PV. Much better looking, and less flammable too.
