East Lothian Newbie
Hi everyone. I'm a wifie from Edinburgh who now lives just outside in the glorious countryside of East Lothian. I've become more and more entranced with proper heritage stuff and have just started learning to play the chanter. I'm bloody god-awful, but I really enjoy it so far. This led me to also decide that I want to make a kilt. My gran's sister was allegedly properly trained, and she taught my gran how to do it (she was a pretty good seamstress). My mum was meant to learn from my gran, but that didn't happen what with one thing or another.
Anyway - I've decided that the only thing stopping me from learning is my own fear, so as with the chanter, I figure I can start to learn now, or I can put it off for another 10 years and be 58 and still not know how. I figure I can work with my mum and finally she'll be able to be content that she "knows" how to do it, even if she doesn't make one from scratch. I'll get her doing some of the stitching, which will make it a proper heirloom for my brother who's getting married next year. I did look at some of the courses, but I'm self employed, and I can't take that much time off, so "self-taught" it is.
I've got TAoKM book, and I've binged everything Robert MacDonald has put online, so while I feel (prematurely) confident, I've not even got so far as to choosing a tartan yet. I picked up an end-of-roll meter or so of lightweight Black Watch to practice with, and only then realised it's a tricky sett to figure out. Damn.
Still - I'm practicing pleating and figuring out sett v stripe, and working out quite how in the heck I'll do it, but I'm looking forward to it.
Cheers a'body.

Welcome from a Scotsman (Glaswegian) now living in the English midlands.
All the best with the kilt-making - hope your efforts will bear fruit.
I'll be spending a week in Edinburgh this summer, and very much looking forward to it - a great place!
