Embracing my family heritage
First of all, I would like to say Thank You to the members here. Thank You for the information, Thank You for the encouragement, Thank You for the inspiration. It was about a year ago that I decided to look into getting a kilt. My mothers family immigrated from Scotland to Canada and although I was adopted, it's the only family I've ever known. I remember my Uncle wearing a kilt on a few occasions but we didn't see him much and it was never really talked about.
So about a year ago, I went to the Celtic Fling in Manheim, PA where I happened to run into Rocky and the crew from USA Kilts. After talking with them, I ordered my first kilt, a 5yd wool Mackenzie Modern.
After a two month wait, it was ready, and since I live in south central PA, I drove down to pick it up. I did this for a couple reasons. This was my first kilt experience, I needed to know how to put it on, and I needed all the accessories, ie. sporran, belt, etc. Lucas was very helpful and patient with me and got me all squared away. Thank You.
My first stop after picking it up was my Mom's house. She was in total shock. It was a wonderful bonding experience.
Since then, I have worn it in public twice, once at a local festival where a Celtic band was playing, and once at a concert where some Celtic music fans and friends were. I can assure you, stepping out the front door the first time with the kilt on was definitely a unique experience and a bit nerve racking. Without the support, the stories, and encouragement from all of you here, I don't know if I would have been able to do it. All comments were good, save one. There's always one, right. No big deal.
I am looking forward to wearing it again and plan to in the next few months. My main goal with this kilt was getting it right, authentic if you will. To honor my family heritage. Now I want another one. Some say it's a disease, maybe I have it now.
p.s. My avatar pic was taken at my mom's the day I picked up the kilt.

Well met new friend Firetow17. Kilting is a happy surprise that you give, and others get. It sounds like the delight in your mother's eyes was worth the venture. You are right in there is always the "one" moment while in public. Too bad for them, eh? The positives outweigh the negatives every time though.
Sorry about the "kilt addiction" issue. Maybe you'll become a carrier of the bug rather than a case study of obsession. We'll wait to hear the prognosis.
