Fianace of a potential kilt wearer :)
Hello all!
I have loved kilts all my life, tho female... My fiance is of Scottish decent, an 'Akins'. He has dreamed of owning his own for quite a long time. Now that we are engaged we are looking to invest in his first kilt for our wedding! So that is why i am here. To learn a bit more and gain some advice.
we live in Alabama, US.
Blessings to all
Megan

Akins is a sept of the House of Gordon. It is just a matter of personal taste but I think that the Gordon tartan is really, very nice especially the Dress Gordon. Perfect for a wedding with a black jacket.

From Toronto, Ontario, Canada. for the Gordon Dress which I agree would be great for a wedding of course there are several Gordon setts out there and another may suit him better, the good news is the tartan is readily available. If it were me, I would go with a kilt maker and get a hand sewn kilt. As this is for something so special you will of course want the best you can get, an heirloom item that can be handed down to the next generation.
I would get in touch with Barb Tewksbury, her ad is on the side of the page she is wonderful to work with and one of the best kilt makers in the world. I have 3 kilts by Barb and they are my favourite kilts.

Welcome to the Forum. While I concur that Dress Gordon would look excellent at your wedding, your fiancé may find one of the other Gordon tartans to be more versatile in terms of future wear on less formal occasions, such as Modern Gordon or Ancient Gordon. Weathered Gordon is my most admired kilt but being brown would make it less suitable for a wedding. Maybe he will find like a number of us, that one kilt is not enough as time passes.
Best wishes

Greetings Megan, and congratulations. So good to have you onboard. This is a great place to learn about kilts and highland dress. I am sure you will make great friends here, as I have. The Gordon tartan is indeed a lovely tartan, although I would lean toward the standard modern than the dress, but that is a personal choice thing, so ultimate allow your good fiancé to choose. Barb Tewksbury, as has been noted, is both a wonderful lady and an excellent kiltmaker. We await photos of the happy day.

Thank you!
Thank you to all! I will peruse around a while. the Gordon selections are nice, thank you all for the suggestion! It will ultimately be his choice of course. I am just the one with more time on my hands to gather the info for his decision. For instance he is shampooing our carpet in the new house as we speak! I have a winner
