First public appearance in kilt.
Hi all !
First a short presentation, I'm 58 of age, living near Montreal, Quebec and I work as a chemist for the federal governement. I'm a native french quebecer and very proud of it,
I always dreamed to wear a kilt but the price of a complete outfit was rather hight. Recently I futfilled that fantasy and dream and bought a jacobite kilt outfit with the province of Quebec tartan.
I'm wondering why I waited so long to get one ? I must admit that I feel extremly confortable in it and the look is unbelievable.
The next step and the biggest challenge was to go outside my home and go in public to see how people reacts seeing somebody wearing a kilt.
The place of choice was a local shopping mall where I go every week to do my grocery. As much as possible I tried to look as natural as possible despite the normal aprehension. To my great surprise I saw no direct reaction from the crowd. However I listen to some faint laughting after people passed me.
The most aggressive reaction was from a male motorist when I crossed the street. He told me the men in skirts must go in the gay district. Dumb people are everywhere.

Welcome from the West Coast of Canada. Wearing a kilt gets easier the more you wear it and as you become more comfortable and confident in wearing a kilt.
One bit of advise that Thompson offers in his book, is to listen to all the talking and laughter the next time you are at the same place in pants. While some of the talking and whispering may have been about the kilt, chances are most people admired it or didn't even notice it.
Best of luck and welcome to the forum.

Welcome to X-Marks, Pierre!
Sorry to hear that your first day out in the kilt was a little rough. You are in good company here though. Like you said, stupid people are everywhere. It takes courage to wear the kilt with pride and confidence in public. Keep at it... there are some folks who will appreciate it and tell you so.
I am also new to wearing the kilt, but find that the more I wear it the more confident I become and the more nice comments I recieve. But we will likely run into that odd idiot on occassion too.
Be Blessed,
Kevin

Welcome Pierre, it's great to hear "first time out" stories.
You are truly a Braveheart for beginning at local places instead of a celtic event (as I did).
Enjoy your kilt often, it's the only thing worth wearing.

As long as you feel comfortable and you know you look good, that is all that counts. Focus on that and your confidence will grow by leaps and bounds.
Welcome to the forum, by the way.

Welcome Pierre!
It's nice to "hear" your story regarding the first time out: hopefully, it lends a little strength to others. Don't let the few dissuade you from your path. Il y a des insults auquel an homme qui serait respecte ne peu pas respondre que par le silence, ou le meprise.
Bryan...my apologies for my poor French...

Pierre,
I won't even attempt my French as it is bad, but WELCOME! In deed you found a place to share your experiences.
Yes jerks are every where. The other day I was with a friend walking to my car, me kilted and he in trousers, when someone yelled something from his car. My friend says that he gets those comments all the time, and thought that they were directed to him and not me.
I am so glad that you have discovered the comforts of kilts. Many of us found out how great they are past the age of 50.
Again welcome.

Welcome to the forum!!!! Dont worry, comfort comes with experience. Ive been kilted for about 8 months now (Im 23) and it just feels so natural. I rebel every time my girlfriend wants me to wear pants!!!!! Anyway, enjoy your kilt and forget about the ignorant people. Ive discovered that they just dont have what it takes to say anything to your face, only driving by at 40mph. Cowards.
