G'day!
Hello All. It's been a while since I've belonged to a forum, but I have an interests in kilts and where to buy them so now I'm registered here!
I am Nova Scotian, born and raised.
Currently aged 27 years and a member of the Canadian Forces, where I cook.
I got my first taste of kilt wearing from my 2 year stint as an Infantryman Reservist in Nova Scotia (The Nova Scotia Highlanders. 1st Battalion) It was the real deal. All wool. Very heavy. Not down on lingo obviously. I'm not sure the weight of a military dress kilt. 10 yards? I'm not even sure really.
It was great! I loved everything to do with the kilt! The symbolisms and the heraldry of my province made me extremely proud so I remain an enthusiast of things Scotian!
However, not being of any kind of ancestry or family makes it hard to relate to some things Scottish (family crests/emblems, etc.) So proud to be where I'm from is fine with me!
I have since had a "Hot Topic" Ultility kilt. Probably some weak cotton/polyester blend. Lots of loops, grommets and pockets.
I had purchased a "Sport Kilt" from the website of the same name. McDonald tartan! Like the one I first wore with the Highlanders! Sort of cheap but it got my back into the love of the kilt.
And nextly, my newest and favourite is an all black acrylic kilt from an ebay vendor, Tartanista. I love the sporran I got with it and the way it looks and feels. And the price was right!
I have plans to get more kilts. Some, for now, acrylic or poly viscose or whatever else they're made out of that's not in the higher price ranges.
I have contacted a "Scottish Country Store" in a place called "Fergus, Ontario". They said they'd make me a wool kilt (5 yards? Maybe??) for around $500; of Nova Scotia tartan naturally.
That will follow after a few I have in mind. (Maple Leaf tartan. Acrylic or something cheapish)
I love bagpipe music (punk rock or otherwise), whiskies of all types (however like a good kilt, I haven't any experience with good scotches. Damn you expensive tastes!!) and other typical Scottish themed things among many other unrelated interests.
Hope to get some good information on here and get to buy a few kilts in the process!
Cheers!

Hi, Dwain, and welcome to X Marks from the bottom end of Africa.
Good to see that you have gone for Nova Scotia tartan. I love the way the Canadians have district tartans for every province, every territory and for smaller districts from Newfoundland to BC.
Perhaps you could get a bonnet badge with Nova Scotia’s provincial crest on it. Or failing that, one with a maple leaf to show your nationality.
Regards,
Mike

Welcome to the "Great Rabble!"
A man can always wear the tartan of his old regiment! Hope to see pictures of you in it some day soon!

Hi, Pit Rat
Welcome to Xmarks, and as a fellow member of the free world I appreciate your service to your country. If you are looking for less expensive synthetic kilts, I would suggest PV [poly viscose] over acrylic. I think it is by far the best synthetic fabric for kilts. Good luck in your kilt shopping and it`s great to have you here.

Welcome Pit to the great rabble. If you are thinking of the Nova Scotia tartan, I highly recommend you check with Keltoi, one of the advertisers at the top of this page. John made a beautiful Nova Scotia tartan kilt for me about a year ago. (Boy how time flies) He is located in Kitchener Ontario.

Welcome from a displaced Scotian (CB). I heartily agree that kilt of your former Bn tartan is a great idea to add to your growing collection.
