Greetings!
Hi everyone!
I think I'm going to like it here. I just got my account approved this morning after I stumbled upon this forum while searching for kilt information online. The kilt info is primarily for my dear boyfriend--who currently owns exactly ZERO kilts but who is also half Scottish (his mother was a Nisbet--sadly, she passed away several years ago) and is COMMITTED to wearing a kilt for our eventual wedding and then expanding it to more everyday wear. Since I tend to be the power user when it comes to the Internet, I figured I'd better join and get the skinny on all things kilt-related.
As for myself, I can also claim Scottish ancestry through my great-grandmother who was a Buchan. One of my dad's cousins has done some impressive genealogical research that's gone back to my five-times great-grandfather who was born in Edinburgh in the 1760s; just a generation after Culloden. More recent Buchan relatives hailed from Perth, although I believe the traditional Buchan stomping grounds are in the Aberdeenshire region. HOWEVER, I'm also a fifth-generation Minnesotan, which means that I've got a lot of Scandinavian ancestry as well--Norwegian, Swedish AND Finnish to be exact. Hence my screen name.
I lived in Chicago for a decade but moved to north central Iowa last summer for a great job that also put me closer to family. I've been fortunate enough to have traveled to Scotland a couple of times and immediately felt a connection that I truly wasn't expecting. I will probably be more of a "lurker" and just absorb the knowledge of previous posts, so let me take this opportunity to say "thanks!" to all of you who've contributed to such a large, consolidated body of kilt knowledge!

Welcome Shari from Southern Ontario. As one who has Buchan ancestry, I hope you are aware of John Buchan, one of Scotland's most famous novelists. His best known work is 39 Steps but he wrote many other spy, adventure and historical novels. He was also Governor General of Canada in the late 1930s before his death in 1939. He is one of my favourite all time writers. As well, there are several very handsome Buchan tartans so you have a great Scottish connection!

Welcome, Shari, from Vancouver, WA. If your wedding is more than a couple days away, don't make him wait! Get him started now!
Studies have shown that women who gain a few pounds live longer than men who mention it.

Welcome to the XMTS Community Shari.......don't be a stranger......and encourage that man of yours to join here as well. Buchan or Buchannon? I've been told that some dropped the the last part of the name, but I am not one of the experts/ knowledgeable ones in this particular area.
