Greetings from Brevard, NC
Hi, everyone! I am a true "Newbie!" I have a kilt in the Ulster tartan but my maiden name was Fitzsimmons. I now discover there is a new Fitzsimmons tartan. Should I wear the Ulster tartan? (purchased in 1996, before the new Fitzsimmons tartan was created) The Avatar shows my daughter, Belinda and her friend, Michael. They met at Grandfather Mountain in 1997 during the Highland Games. She was singing in Gaelic in front of a campfire. Anyway, I am really excited to find this website!!!

Hello and from the wooded highlands of The Big South Fork, north central Tennessee!
I too am of "Ulster ancestry" but had a kilt made in County Tyrone tartan because that is the origin of my family name and I just really like the tartan, otherwise I would have used the Ulster Red. Can't tell you what you should do but I'd go with which either of those tartans you liked the best and had the most meaning for you. Hopefully, those two things will coincide

Thanks for your reply! We were visiting Helen, GA many years ago where we found a little wee shop that showed tartans and maps of Scotland (unable to remember the name of the shop). The lady checked on the Fitzsimmons name and told us, "Aye, they were Irish, but the Scots let them stay." That is why we bought the Ulster kilt and sash. I like the newer Fitzsimmons tartan but am attached to the Ulster because our daughter wore it.

Sara, wear the kilt you have! There are no kilt police. Buy a Fitzsimmons when you can afford to. You cannot have too many kilts!

Welcome! Though I'm so new here myself, that's a bit like the cabin crew on a plane welcoming you who you've just landed :-)

A big Canadian welcome, Sara! Glad you have you here. In case you haven't figure out yet, asking this bunch if you should buy a new kilt is a silly question! The answer will always be a resounding YES! ;-) That being said, it sounds as if you have a real connection to the kilt you currently wear, and first and foremost, your tartan is about where your heart is. So continue to wear your Ulster with joy and if God smiles upon you enough that you can afford another kilt and you want the new Fitzsimmons then by all means go for it.
