Greetings from Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania
Hail, friends, and well met. I found my way to the forum by accident; I was originally becoming interested in the SCA, but my research showed the costume involvement was very steep, even at peasant level.
Now, being a cyclist, I'm quite used to wearing clothing that the general public thinks...unusual. In other words, I'm not afraid to try different clothes that may be more comfortable, and even more practical (?) than our every day North American garb. A dhoti is not going to work with the climate here, but I think the kilt would be perfect.
This idea was re-enforced when my lady love introduced me to the BBC series Monarch of the Glen. It looks to me as if the kilt can easily replace jeans as everyday casual wear. I've spent one evening lurking about here, as well as following links and gazing at You Tube. I'm pretty sure I'll have to try a modern washable kilt first, then sew one with the help of my lady love. A birthday present to myself, in lieu of a new fountain pen, then a winter's project. What do you think?

First and foremost, Well met. You will find many like the utility kilt for durability, affordability and wash-ability. There are those that have made their own kilts using painter's drop/canvas material which may fit your ideas. The remaining part of your post can be answered by browsing through the archives. Just ask and someone will direct you. The magic of discovery begins then. Welcome from Oxford, MS.

Welcome! (from a former Commonwealth resident and Ship grad)
You are correct, a modern or utility kilt is a great casual alternative. Enjoy!

Welcome Blankchaz, from Owen Sound, ON.
I lived east of you near Philly for 4 years. Totally understand about the weather - 3 seasons can be hot and muggy in your neck of the woods. Kilts are the only way to go in my books.
Love Monarch of the Glen.
Great idea to make yourself a kilt this winter, take pics as you go - makes a great record of your work. Of course, we want to see the results!
