Hello. my name is John and i am new to the forum. I am doing more research on my Scottish history and would like to find out more info on kilts and the proper way to wear them.

My mother's clan is Sandilands, part of the Douglas clan and I found this forum while looking up info on the Douglas Tartan i purchased. I also got a glengary, clan badge and tartan pin. I plan on getting the other items, when i have the money, but i am really curious, on where to get the part that goes over the shoulder and can be used as a hood or blanket. I do not know the name of it.

Again, thank you for letting me join and i cannot wait to learn more on kilts.

Hello John, and welcome to X Marks from Delaware. That's great that you got a Douglas tartan to honor your Scottish heritage.

In my opinion, the sash (goes over the shoulder) is absolutely the last thing you would need, if ever at all. Sometimes used in formal situations, it's rarely used otherwise. With the 'Great Kilt' it's part of the kilt and was used (very practically) as a cloak or blanket as needed. I would suggest that you concentrate on other kilt kit items such as hose, garters, sgian dubh, sporran and perhaps, a nice kilt jacket & waist coat.

You have come to the right place to learn more. Peruse this forum, there's a lot of good threads about accessories and what to wear, when and how. Also, look at the pictures both here and on some of the advertisers sites to get ideas and to be inspired.

Welcome John from Southampton UK. I agree with Nile that the fly plaid which goes over the shoulder is the last thing that you need to acquire unless you go to many formal occasions and even then its a bit over the top and guilding the lily.

You've certainly come to the right place to resolve your questions. I don't have a fly plaid either and it isn't in my plans any time soon - I don't think I'd have cause to wear it more than a couple of times. But each to his own.
