Greetings from Ottawa, Canada
Not exactly a newbie as I have have my formal kilt for a few years now. I wish I had found this site earlier - so many good resources and heated conversations.
Kilts:
Traditional 8 yard 16 oz wool in Maclellan - my first kilt. My Pride and Joy.
Traditional cut light weight poly-cotton in woodland hunting camo - purchased for working at the cottage, going to festivals and because spilling beer on my formal kilt would make me very, very sad. Makes a "quick put something on" when camping and pisses off the "sarong wearing sensitive men" at the festivals.
Utilikilt Workman - heavier fabric than the camo so more protection in the shop and has built in pockets. I also use this as a "costume" piece for Steampunk events.
Shoes? I have ghillies but usually wear Docs in boot or shoe styles as appropriate.
Hose? One pair greeny blue to match the tartan and another off white and blue mixed hand knit by a friend from wool I dyed with my own woad. Other wise boot socks shoved or rolled down as the mood dictates.
Wear to Work? Yes - The formal for special events and the Utilikilt when hot enough that shorts are acceptable men's wear at work.
Commando? When appropriate. Kilts are great in hot weather.
The Question - usually answered with just a smile or "I am dressed appropriately for the occasion."
Traditionalist or Modernist? - Yes - respect the reason behind the design.
Scotch - peaty - Laphroaig is very nice
Beer - Stouts and browns
That was longer than I had intended but should cover my position on all the hot button issues here ;) .

A warm Scottish welcome from middle England.
If you are going to do it, do it in a kilt!
