Greetings and Salutations from the hills of East Tennessee!
Greetings All!
I'm Bryan, also known as Derg, The True Derg, and more recently DergtheBeardedandKilted!
I'm a Stay-at-home dad to 3, one son of my flesh and 2 bonus daughters😁
After losing my grandparents in 2015 and 2020 I started doing more and more research into our lineage and found that not only was my grandfather of Scottish descent, via his mother, a Gilkison, but also my grandmother through her mother, a descendant of Clan Stewart.
I received my first kilt as a Christmas present from my future father-in-law and quickly ordered a utility kilt lol I love the comfort, and the connection to history I feel when kilting(and the breeze ain't so bad either eh?😆)
I look forward to knowing you all! Slàinte!

Welcome from Inverness-shire. Just so that you know, the ultility kilt was designed by an American in recent times and has absolutely nothing to with the history and traditions of the Scottish kilt. For accuracy's sake, there are some here that will have the history of the utility kilt and who designed it etc. to hand and, I am sure, will enlighten you if asked.

Sorry for your loss.
I too got interested in my family history only after the best sources of that history had passed away.
My father and grandmother told me much, but I was a stupid kid and I didn't pay as much attention as I should have done. I've been able to piece together most of it on my own.
I too discovered Stewart ancestry. My family is from southwestern West Virginia, the Oceana/Pineville area, and I'm a direct descendant from the first two European settlers there, both Revolutionary War veterans, John Cooke and Captain Ralph Stewart.

As Jock says these are a recent invention. Many may not be aware of the history: they were invented by a guy in Seattle Washington a number of years ago, who dubbed his invention the Utilikilt.
For a few years he was the only one who made them. They became hugely popular here on the West Coast USA.
At every one of our local Highland Games there would be a Utilikilt booth and they would sell out their entire stock over the weekend.
The founder/owner made one vow: that he would never make a tartan Utilikilt! They initially were heavy canvas in black, tan, olive green, dark blue, and grey. Later he made them also in camouflage and Hawai'ian prints.
Later a number of firms around the USA began copying Utilikilts. Now they're mass-produced in Pakistan, and even some Scottish makers are offering them, sometimes in tartan.
BTW my mother lived for a time in Elizabethton in East Tennessee. She's back in West Virginia now.
I live in California now, but oddly enough my son and I were driving through Tennessee and West Virginia just last week.
