Greetings from the Texas Panhandle
Greetings, ladies and gents.
My name is Jason Griffith, and I come from a small town in the Texas panhandle by the name of Pampa. I am a complete newb in the wonderful world of kilts; in fact I'm probably more of a newb-newb as I don't even own my first kilt yet. I've considered owning a kilt for quite a while now, and after a recent trip to Scarborough Faire down in Waxahachie and seeing so many represented there in person I decided it's time to go ahead and pull the trigger. My wife has Irish ancestry and mine is Welsh, and her father happens to be a genealogist with a particular interest in European history so we have managed to find my family's CoA, Welsh tartan, etc.
While looking at various sites to find a kilt, I stumbled onto a link that to the forums here which in turn gave me links to several other sites, so I've stumbled onto a vast network of kilt knowledge that I didn't even know was out there. It's a bit overwhelming really, but I'm sure I'll get it all sorted out before too long. I'm a big fan of forums, so I was pretty excited when I found the link that introduced me to you.
The wonderful world of kilts is an interesting one, and it seems like I get a little different information in every place I look. Particularly as it relates to things like who should wear which tartans (wear whatever you want vs. wear only what you can represent yourself), how you should wear your kilt (hide the knees vs. show the knees, full outfit or bust vs kilt is all you need), what material it should be made from, whether you should have different kilts for different events/activities, and so forth. So far this site seems to be the best place to get those answers as there are several people willing to share their opinions rather than whoever created the other sites giving their own and treating it as law. Prices seem to vary drastically with no clear indication (to a newb) as to why. Is $40 too cheap, indicating that there would be a quality/comfort issue? Is $700 too expensive, or is that indicative of superior quality/comfort? Like I said, lots of info to absorb out there.
So, I'll be roaming around the boards here looking for all the newb info I can find, and of course I'm always open to advice. The big decision right now is where to get the first kilt, what to have it made out of, whether I should go for the family tartan right off the bat (higher price) or go with something more generic like a non-tartan kilt or one that's designed to be used by everyone (cheaper).
Also, if there are any fellow Mormons on the forums here, I'd like to have a private message chat about any issues you've had wearing a kilt with your garments or advice you'd like to give on the subject.

Reason: (1) Edited to clarify the question at the bottom. (2) Grammar. Cursed grammar.

from Chicago. $40 is not too cheap. I have a Stillwater Economy kilt in Irish National I paid $30 for. It's great for St. Patrick's day. No worries about spills or worse. A custom made kilt or cilt (Welsh) costs more, but you can start with something less expensive until you figure out exactly what you want. Don't forget there are Irish and Welsh tartans.

Thanks for the welcoming replies and PM's, everyone.
@rlh2 I've been through Forney a couple of times. I travel down to Hillsboro/Milford/Waxahachie/Cleburne quite a bit for work, and when I get bored I like to hit the road and explore the other towns in the area. I don't think I've ever stopped in Forney, but I've been there at least.
