Greetings from Vancouver, BC
I won't go as far as to call myself a kilt newbie, but I'm definitely out of practice.
I rented a Gordon kilt and accessories for high school graduation mumblety years ago. Not long after that I spent a relatively short amount of time as a squaddie in the Seaforth Highlanders of Canada, so was able to spend a good bit of time in a Mackenzie kilt.
Now I've ordered a MacPherson kilt for our wedding next summer, and received a goodly amount of related gear as Christmas gifts. I'm eager to get my hands on it, and I'm not sure I'll be able to wait for the wedding to wear it.
Maybe that just means I need to put some non-wedding money aside and get a second kilt to wear.

Welcome from Mount Peasant. We have kilt nights on the first Thursday of the month at Doolin's on Granville downtown. Why not break in your kilt there when it arrives?
