After a 20 year hiatus (family, work, and an inconvenient bout of Bell's Palsey) I have finally made the effort to return to the process of learning to play the pipes and have joined a pipe band to ease the empty nest as my youngest heads off to college. Since the band kilt and most of the gear is provided, I've started saving my pennies to buy one of Matt Newsome's beautiful box pleat kilts in the ancient MacFarlane tartan. The MacFarlanes are on my mother's side. The band kilt is MacLean of Duart which I'm more than happy to wear in honor of my wife's family. I'm rather tickled to see the Lovecraft fans here...any Deadheads? (and yes, I promise never to mix tie-dye and tartan.) My father is thrilled. For many years he would buy me pieces of gear for Christmas, but gave up on me when all that was left was a kilt and jacket (and my wife loves hitting the consignment shops, so the perfect jacket to make over should be waiting out there for me somewhere). As a school and part-time college librarian, I can definitely see a Kilt Friday or three in my future.
