Greetings from Wisconsin!
I'm 61, and have been into sports kilts for about 3 years now.
For a very long time I've been intrigued by kilts, but never had the nerve to actually purchase and wear one; I suppose it was the usual muddled male hangups about homosexual overtones.
A friend pestered me until I finally gave in and attended a Women's Roller Derby bout... and much to my pleased amazement, the Head of Security for the rink was kilted!
This guy was about 300 pounds, bearded, and had long, firey red hair. On top of it all... he was in a Schott Brothers "One Star Perfecto" biker's jacket (see Marlon Brando in THE WILD ONE").
Right then and there, I decided... NOTHING in that kilt even hinted at "Gay"... if HE'S man enough to wear one, and be completely comfortable doing it, then SO AM I !!!
I ordered my first kilt online that night.
Not only did I start kilting, but I became part of the Roller Derby community... I hate ALL sports, but something about this one hooked me immediately.
Women's Flat Track Roller Derby seems to have a subculture of kiltists among the male support and officiating crew; we have a referee who skates kilted (NOT Regimental of course... Derby is a FAMILY sport after all, and a LOT of the fans are kids under 10! ), and a number of us wear Utilikilts and Alphakilts in our various roles.
I have to be careful just how I sit down... I'm now a nonskating official; a scorekeeper, and I sit out front on a tall chair!
At the age of 61 I'm trying to learn to skate well enough to pass the test to join "Team Zebra" (become a referee)... and for my first bout I have a specially made Referee's Alphakilt (black with a white pleat down each leg) that I'll wear in public for the first time.
Besides that... I make my daily thin cup of gruel as a TV broadcast engineer.
I'm also a Biker, a hunter / gun nut, and a ham radio nut.

Welcome aboard!
I'm in WI too. Are you going to hit Irish Fest or the Wisconsin Highland Games? Both are coming up fairly soon. The Red Hot Chilli Pipers are going to play all 4 days of Irish Fest, as well as the "preview" in 'Tosa on Wednesday AUG 18th.

It doesn't matter what a person's sexuality is when it comes to kilts, those who love them know and appreciate their benefits and those who don't like them will find any excuse to be jealous!

Congratulations on wearing the kilt!
If you wear your kilt with confidence, that tends to minimize the amount of grief that you might get.
I'm sure you've learned the secret of keeping your legs apart and letting the sporran hold the kilt down for modesty.
