“Slàinte mhòr !” from Australia’s capital, Canberra.
OK, I better out myself as less kilt-wearer than admirer of the kilt. I was smit’ early. As a wee child I lived near the Australian War Memorial http://www.awm.gov.au/ On ANZAC and Remembrance Days I’d peek through a sea of adult legs to see kilts and hairy knees. I’d skip alongside skirling pipes, and leopard-skinned drummers wondering, “Could this 6 year old ever bring down a big cat as these kilted heroes must have done with their sgian dubhs?”
My next run-in with kilts was at my Aunt’s in Balquhidder, Scotland. My birthday was celebrated at the local Burns Night. Glancing at the main meal recipe I swore, “That awful offal shall not pass my lips!” The Haggis was piped in. “In honour of her 16th birthday today, our Downunder visitor shall eat the first serve”. I eyed the dirk that had cut the haggis and pondered skewering those crazy kilt-wearers in my escape. “Eat it!” hissed Mum as her stiletto speared my foot. I did.
Aged 20 I returned. At midnight on Hogmanay my aunt, the district nurse, announced, “We’re first-footing. You're dark-haired. You go first. Now down every dram offered or you’ll offend my patients.” I did. Approx 0300 we arrived at a grand house. Persian carpets were rolled back; pipes and fiddles appeared. We danced for hours. “Who’s for the glen?” asked Roger the gamekeeper. “Go” said my aunt. Jeeps bumped through the dark. Then Roger piped us single-file up a track. I staggered behind waggling kilts. “Shhh...” Dawn silhouetted a stag on the ridge. It descended to eat from Rodger’s hand.
(These men in kilts...they have super-powers!)
To prove it the kilt-wearer pictured sailed over my house. http://www.imagesofcanberra.com.au/d...=8&secondary=0
I may have been sighted in a kilt at 'Brigadoon' www.brigadoon.net.au in New South Wales', Southern Highlands but I could ne'er compete wi' the magic of a gentleman in plaid.
So thanks for letting this fraud join your forum,
Grizz
