Halò and Hi Y'all From the Highlands of SW Missouri, USA

    Hello,

No kilts as of yet, although I have bugged my Mrs. for the last 39 years about getting one (or more). I did house construction for many years and thought that a kilt would be the ideal thing to wear over almost anything else. The Mrs. thinks I'm crazy.

My mother's maiden name was Lamont. Her dad came from a rather large family in South Central Kansas and I know had cousins that hailed from Canada, around the lakes I think.

Not really sure of correct "kilt etiquette" when it comes to not bearing the same Surname. I rarely do anything without researching the heck out of it first (guess it is the engineer showing through). I don't want to do anything wrong which would be incorrect, plus being Scottish, I don't want to pay for something and then not be able to use it. The "blood" runs thick in my veins as I will walk clear across a fair to buy a sandwich or funnel cake if I know I can save a quarter.

Also, when there are several Family Tartans and there appears to be no distinction between them and sept due to origin from a certain location, which one should I use for my first kilt?

Since there are no family members which would be wearing them and I would seldom be attending any function requiring such, is it allowable to use personal preference?

The Modern Tartan as well as the Ancient Tartan are some of my favorite color combinations and always have been, even before I made the connection with my grandfather's last name and Scotland, however, I really like the more subdued Hunting Tartan.

I would like to start off right and would like a custom made kilt at some point, but I also like the idea of the great kilt, boots, and a Jacobite shirt. I think I came from a more rebellious side of the family as something really stirs me when listening to tribal drum and pipes from several groups I have found on the internet and nothing sounds as beautiful as "Scotland, Home of the Brave" or "Amazing Grace" on pipes. It just gives me chills and brings a tear when I hear them.

    It's a Kilt...it's only a skirt if I'm wearing underwear!
~KILT~is what happened to the last person to call it a dress!

Welcome from Washington State. I didn`t quite understand your question, but if I were you, I would go with the tartan of whatever clan I had the closest connection to. Whether to go with modern, ancient, or hunting colors is an agonizing choice that is entirely up to you!

I guess that is my conundrum; I like all of them and being a grandson of Lamont with a different last name, I didn't want my ancestors rolling over in their graves in disapproval, plus if I choose all even at the entry level kilt, my wife would end up with the house and the T.V.
