    Hello!

Hello, I’m a new member and would like to introduce myself. My name is Alexandra Glass. I’m very happy to have found this group and to be able to join.

My last name is Glass and according to my father-Alexander Glass our family originally heralded from The Isle of Butte, several hundreds of years ago. I’m told my last name means “grey” in Scottish Gaelic and that the original spelling was Glas.

I was raised from a baby in the Caribbean: St. Martin, a little schooling in St. Thomas, Puerto Rico till I had just turned 16, then my family moved to Costa Rica. I feel a strong affinity with the Latin American culture, but my father always emphasized pride in our last name and Our Scottish heritage. In 1986 my family visited Nova Scotia where I was amazed to see people that looked like me for the first time in my life! My father said “see they look Scottish, as you do (I have always had red in my hair color and am fair). I was delighted. I couldn’t get enough of staring at everyone. Lol.

For many years I have lived in Los Angeles, California. Grateful for the many cultures surrounding me.

I understand that our family’s tartan is the Stuart tartan. I don’t know much about tartans and kilts, although I do love them. I hope the man I chose to be with doesn’t mind wearing a kilt at sometime, because I think they look beautiful on a man. So, I’m guessing that my Glass ancestors supported the Stuart kings? Yay.
Would someone more knowledgeable of my “clans” background be willing to share more about this choice of kilt and anything about the Glass family?

Again, I’m grateful to be part of this group.
As I’m new to this site, please forgive me if I don’t immediately respond to any answers. I assure you that I’ll learn.

    Thank you,
    -Alexandra

I have never been ybut would love to go.

Alexandra, there are a million "obvious" questions asked here. A lot of the ones that are obvious to me now weren't when I first joined. You'll be fine!

Welcome! I'm in Southern California also, down in Orange County.

Glas is one of those fascinating Gaelic words that has no direct equivalent in English. Well, they say that no word in any language has word in any other language that's a complete 1:1 equivalent! Glas is like that.

Because yes it can mean "grey" but also "green" and many other things, here in my Gaelic dictionary:

    Glas (noun) a lock

Glas (adjective) pale, wan, grey, green (of grass); leana ghlas, a green plain; glas-neulach, pale-faced, young, fresh; glasbheinn, green mountains; glasghille, young lad

Not in my dictionary but a Gaelic-speaking friend told me that glas in connection with drink means "soft" as in the English term "soft drink" (non-alcoholic).
Proud Mountaineer from the Highlands of West Virginia; son of the Revolution and Civil War; first Europeans on the Guyandotte

    Hi

    Hello OC Richard!

I’m so happy to receive a reply from a fellow Southern Californian! I knew there was at least one of you out here.

Thank you for sharing the different Gaelic meanings of the name Glass. I had an Irish stage actor client who when he heard that my last name was Glass, promptly told me that in Ireland the meaning of Glass meant “green”. Loved that.

Thank you for sharing the other meanings and affiliations. I have just recently read more about my surname. What is your Scottish heritage?

There must be more activities dedicated to Scottish activities out here? Perhaps some games? Or, wearing of kilts? Something, or books? I can ask you a ton of questions, but don’t want to overwhelm you.

I’am squinting on my iPhone 11 for info on this site. I have a laptop, don’t use it, occasionally use my iPad. My fault.

Tell me more about your Scottish heritage. I’m always happy to learn more.

    -Alexandra

    Omg...didn’t read your full email!

    Oc, Richard!
I just reread my email. You are a Glass, too?? I rarely meet Glasses” that aren’t Jewish. Nothing wrong with that, but the name is originally Scottish. They are always surprised to hear that, but we love to exchange info.
Sorry that I didn’t catch that you are a Glass fro your email. This site is challenging for me to read at times, but I have no excuse with my email.

Hello, Alexandra, from Inverness-shire (and overlooking the Salish Sea in British Columbia for the next few months, at least! -- better to be safe that sorry).

A minor correction for you: the Isle you refer to is Bute (with one 't') .
