Hello from East Tennessee
Hi Guys and Gals
My name is Elkan and I live in Jonesborough, Tennessee. My introduction to the celtic society came to me due to a particularly bad motorcycle wreck that took me out of the game of life for a little while. As I was healing from my list of injuries (concussion, collapsed lungs, shattered shoulder blade, three broken vertebrae, three broken ribs, and a very large and very painful subdural hematoma covering my left butt that is still there 3 years later) I was getting very depressed just setting around the house all day. My youngest daughter asked me if we could go check out a celtic festival in Elizabethton, Tn. so I said sure why not. I was so fascinated by the whole event that I started looking into my family heritage to see if we were connected to Scotland. I found that I am connected on both sides, The Gorgon Clan on my maternal side and The Clan MacKay through my surname. Well naturally the next step that I started thinking on was " I WANT A KILT ". I was disappointed and overwhelmed right away by the cost of a traditional wool in one of my family tartans. This brought the whole thing to a screeching halt. Fast forward to a few months ago. An acquaintance of mine through my daughters girl scouts invited me to try out his "Great Kilt" for an event that was going on downtown. I was hooked and he showed me that there are cheaper options that I could start out with before spending the big bucks. We have the Grandfather Mountain Highland Games (only about 60 miles from here) coming up in a couple months so I will have plenty of oppertunity to enjoy my kilt.
I have already learned a lot from these forums in just the few hours since I found them. I plan to enjoy this site for years to come and I hope i can be as much help to others someday.
