Hello Everyone, Derk from Central Illinois USA here, glad to be here.
Just wanted to learn some more about the "kilt". According to my family's researching , resident geneologist, I am authorized to wear one of 8 differently identified kilts. Would someone know who I could get ahold of and get at least one of the 8 kilts, so that I may begin to wear our colors? Thank you in advance!

I'm sure others will pipe in, but obviously the first thing to know is which ones you would like to wear (maybe based on your lastname or other clan affiliation?), then check out kilt makers and vendors, starting with those on these pages. That will give you an idea of the kind of fabric and price range you'd like for your kilt. Obviously, that will also give you an idea of what the tartan looks like. You may find that you like one better than the others because of colors, sett, etc. BTW, make sure you also read the FAQs. There you'll find that there are universal tartans that anybody can wear.

Hello Derk,
Welcome to XMarks from the other side of the Atlantic in Norfolk, England.
We are pretty good here. I am constantly amazed by the collective wealth of knowledge we have.
But...
Mindreaders, we are not. So you are going to have to give us a clue as to which 8 tartans you are thinking of. Then we can advise you.
Regards
Chas

Welcome, Derk, from the highlands of Central Massachusetts. The choice is yours as to tartan. Look at family affiliations, tartan designs and think hard about what suits you best. Think about how and when you intend to wear it. There are a variety of levels of quality for what people have come to call the kilt and some variation in designs. You will find it all here.

Hi Chas! Thank you for your time on my question. I shall look a bit deeper into the lineage of my family, as well as the clan, and see what is there. Have a great day!

Hi tulloch, Thank you for the welcome sir. I shall look into my family's history a bit deeper and make a decision. I'd love to wear the kilt everywhere, but doubt that will happen. We will be assembling with family "get togethers" as time goes on, and the men shall where the kilts of our heritage. I'm happy to have found the website and appreciate your time on my questions. Enjoy the day!

Welcome to the "Great Rabble!"
Pick your tartan, plan for the best quality kilt you can afford (the joy of high quality lasts long after the delight of cheap price has faded) and pick a good kiltmaker, possibly from among the advertisers here. Don't forget the accessories - to me, a sporran and hose (not white!) with garters (usually better than "garter tabs") are the most essential. The rest can come later depending on where you plan to wear your kit.
A good kiltmaker who is near you will avoid import duties, and allow you to be measured by the individual who will also put the needle through the cloth, and whom you can visit to ask questions.
Welcome, and enjoy!

Welcome from sunny California
I recommend ordering swatches of fabric from the mills. Each tartan is available in different shades and you may find one you like beter than the others. The swatches also show the true colors which are not what you see on the computer screen.
