Hello from Lancaster Pa
Hello, well I pulled a security detail at our local Celtic Fling and Highland games and everyone had on kilts and bodyarmour and swords of all shapes and sizes and I must say I was instantly intrigued. Now I am hellbent on trying to find out what type of kilt if any did my ancestors wear. I am Puerto Rican and my last name is Mendez and it originates from the Visogoths. If anyone has a clue please fill me in cause I dont even know where to start.

Welcome, from Madison, WI!
I'm sorry to break your bubble, but the Visigoths did not wear kilts. The kilt is historically a Scottish garment until about the past 100 years or so when it spread to other Celtic areas. But you can dress up with the swords and armor all you want at a Rennaissance Faire! Remember, you don't have to be Scottish to wear a kilt. No matter what your last name is, you're more than welcome here.

Hello and a warm Celtic from Boston, Massachusetts.
As Beliotpiper has said... You do not have to be Scottish to wear the kilt. There are many tartans that do not designate the wearer at all. Also gaining popularity here in the U.S. are contemporary kilts in solid colour, as well as camo, etc. Please surf the advertisers on this board for some ideas on how you wish to be kilted. My avatar ( the little picture on the left) is me in the Irish National tartan kilt from Stillwater Kilts. On Saint Patrick's Day, everybody is Irish, and so with wearing the kilt, you do not need any Irish ancestry to wear the Irish National tartan. Now as far as wearing the kilt.... Check out the "dos and donts" thread on this forum.

First welcome to the forum from south central Virginia. Secondly, if you check your ancestors on both sides of your family, you might just find some Scottish ties. Also, there are many generic tartans, including all of the US armed forces. There may even be a tartan for Puerto Rico. Lastly, although I so far have stuck with tartans which have meaning to me, there is nothing wrong with wearing a tartan just because you like it. However, learn something about the tartan you choose as well as some of the clan history.

from both southern US coasts!
How to start? Take a look at some of the vendors here and find a kilt that you like, and then wear it with pride. It would be hard to go wrong.
