Hello from LoUiSiAna
I'm new to the forum. I purchased a utility style kilt a few months ago. I have just returned from a month long trip to Scotland and Ireland. I had a blast and wore my kilt a few times while hiking in various locations including the beach. While I was in Scotland I ran into several people a day who wore kilts. I also spotted people attending formal events like weddings who were decked out in their finest. Then there were folks who were part of the tourist industry who wore them as part of their daily uniform. It was interesting to note that I saw no kilts being worn in Ireland at all. In the U.S., If I attend a Highland Games, celtic festival of some sort, or attend a clan gathering of some sort I see kilts all over the place. In Ireland, the kilted community was not out in force.
My introduction to wearing a kilt was years ago when I worked as a historic interpreter for an 18th century French and Indian War site in Louisiana. I learned how to take a single piece of wool fabric and fold it along the sets, place a belt beneath it, and bind myself into it. Then I could throw the tail end up over my shoulder and pin it if I liked using a simple iron and brass working pin. So I wore a kilt in that style a few times. Twenty years later, I'm wearing a modern utility kilt at home and work the same way that I might wear a pair of trousers. I work as a public school teacher and teach art and pottery. I own a pottery business and sell my work in galleries and shows across the southern United States. I also coach and play ice hockey. I play the guitar and enjoy tying flies and fly fishing when I find the time. I look forward to reading the forum here and chatting with you all. I'm not obsessed with kilts. I just happen to wear one every now and then. I have to admit that I have already begun the process of looking for more items related to the kilt and am strongly considering adding a few more accessories and items to the wardrobe.
