Hello from the lurker in Sacramento, Ca!
Hello XMarkers,
My name is Don and I have been a member for awhile. I orginally came to this site, over a year ago, from a google search on Kilts while researching my family ancestory. As it turns out, my family has been in the USA since the late 1500's (1st re-supply ship to Plymouth). Those ancestors came mostly from the UK, (Scotland, Wales, England, and Ireland.) Not necessarily relevent here.
I digress, in the time I have been on the XMarks I have taken the time to sit back and listen to what the other vetran members of the board have to say. It also gives me an opportunity to learn about the members.
So, I have explained how and why I got here, let me tell you a bit about myself.
I currently live in Northern California, Sacramento. I have been in this area for at least 8 years having moved from Napa, CA. I spent 10 years in the Navy, stationed on the East Coast and had the opportunity to visit the countries in the mediterranean and the Western European countries. The only country I was not able to visit (due to first Iraq war) was the UK (and thats where we had scheduled to sail too). I was able to see the Cliffs of Dover, but that was my extent of the UK. Visiting the UK and Ireland is on my bucket list. I keep planning for it, but never seem to pull the trigger.
My first Kilt was a Utilikilt. Followed by a USA semi-traditional Kilt in the US Navy Tartan and a Black Watch. I have an order in at Freedom Kilt (Black) and I am counting the days for its arrival. I do have one wool kilt in US Navy, but by the time I pulled the trigger and the time it took, it was too large for me. Oh well...thats what I get for losing weight (35lbs so far this year!)
One tidbit I have picked up from this board is "Coke" or "Pepsi" or "Traditional" or "Contempory" kilts. I would have to say I prefer more of a Traditional look, so my Traditional and Contempory kilts tend to look traditional.
The other observation I have picked up on, is how people wear thier kilt. It should not stop at Coke vs Pepsi, but should add bottle or can? Traditional or Contempory and Traditional dress or Contempory dress. I like the more contempory dress, but have no issue dressing in a PC (it can be kinda fun to dress up). I see it no more like a uniform/costume as it would be wearing a tux. Just as there are different types of pants depending on your use, kilts are the same way. There are kilts for dirty work, casual wear, and formal wear.
Anyway, I can ramble on for awhile, and you all have better posts to read today. I look forward to finally opening my mouth and proving it....or not....
Glad to be here.
Don
