Hello from MD
Hello from rainy Maryland! I've been contemplating getting a kilt for years now and finally got up the gumption to do it. So, here I am. I thought I'd start cheap and work my way up, but I really want the MacDougall tartan and those aren't cheap.
My one worry: I'm definitely on the hefty side (okay, I'm just plain fat) and I don't know if the kilt looks good over the belly. And if I ever do lose the weight (a constant plan never fulfilled), can good kilts be altered?

Hello and a warm Celtic from Boston, Massachusetts.
For the first kilt, and as a gentleman of substance, you may wish to try a Semi-traditional at the "kilt" waist. (High on the naval, versus on the hips where one generally wears jeans.) Be sure to check out all the options from the various sponsors on this board. All have great customer service. A generic tartan in a USA Kilts Semi-trad, or a Freedom Kilt will give you the opportunity to fit yourself with a made to measure garment. From wearing it and feeling the fit, you will better know the fit you wish in a bespoke kilt in the clan tartan, which is a much more expensive (and well worth it) kilt.

Hi Commodore,
You have asked some very good questions to which I have no answers. There are many here far better qualified than I. So I will just give you a warm welcome from the other side of the Atlantic in Norfolk, England.
Good luck.
Regards
Chas

Welcome to the forum. Kilts can be altered to some degree. I would suggest checking in with our Gentleman of Substance group. They will be able to give you some solid advice on kilts for the larger gentleman. http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/group.php?groupid=48

I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…

This information has been great! And so quick too! I've definitely come to the right place to begin my kilt journey.
