Hello from Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Canada!
Good afternoon Everyone,
Very excited to be on this forum. Please forgive a little indulgence about my family and I; Although a Canadian first , I was taught, with much reverence, about my family's very strong Scottish, Irish and English ancestry since I was a very young boy and how my family came to Canada in the early 1800's. Family history (most notably family military history) is very important to my family, and I am proud to say my Grandfather, Gordon Young, served in World War 1 with the 1st Canadian Mounted Rifles. While my Great-grandfather, John Hayman, also served in World War 1 with the 33rd Canadian Field Artillery. My Grandfather, Ken Hayman, fought for Canada in World War 2 and served in Sicily and the Liberation of the Netherlands. Last year I retired from the Canadian military after 33 years' service.
I have always been extremely interested in kilts, due to my ancestry/family history and bagpipes (probably because I always marched to the sound of the bagpipes in the military!) I have my first kilt order in, a modern Young, and hopefully I will have it before the new year. As for the bagpipes, I am now taking lessons and enjoying it more than I could have ever imagined. I am very interested in trying to make my own kilt and will be ordering "The Art of kiltmaking" right away.
I am really looking forward to learning from many of you and tapping into the great wealth of knowledge on this forum about kilts, kilt making and hopefully kilts in military history.
Cheers,
Tex Young

Welcome, from Cypress, Texas.
I gotta ask... How does a Canadian end up with a name like "Tex"? Do tell.

Lol...well, long story short...I am the youngest of 9 children. My parents and all my siblings were born in Ontario. However, before I was born my parents moved out west to Alberta which is where I was born. I was given my father's name but to differentiate me and my father they added another middle name of Tex since I was the only sibling born out "west" in cowboy country and have been called by my middle name of Tex since birth
Liam- I have a little bit of history with Mortlach. While serving in the military I was involved with the Remembrance Day speaker program, where they would have military members speak and be part of a school's Remembrance Day ceremonies and in 2018, I was invited to be the guest speaker at Mortlach school for their Remembrance Day ceremonies! Btw, 98 years old aunt....wow!
