My first kilt was an AK Khaki to wear to my brother's casual attire wedding. The test run was at Molly MacPherson's Pub in Savanna GA to see if I had the nerve to wear a kilt not only out in public but also where people knew me. All went well at Molly's. My first complement came from a lady that saw me at the hotel I was stay at and later in a shop across from Molly's. This was all I needed to wear the kilt to the wedding. It took my brother 30 min. to notice the kilt. He wanted to do a kilt check but I said this was not the time or place, he just laughed and said only you would wear a kilt to his wedding. As I was talking to an old friend an older Lady that was seated pulled on my kilt and asked me if I knew the correct way to wear a kilt. I said yes I did and turn back to my friend. She did this 3 times. I never gave her an answer to the question. She asked me what the AK stood for on the kilt and then told me about her Scottish ancestry. I had others who asked the question and I said if they realy wanted to know they could ask my wife. Only she knew the answer. Good time had by all that attended the wedding
I retired in 2001 from full time Army active duty after twenty-nine years. I served in Desert Storm in 1991. My father was in the USMC and fought at Iwo Jima and Peleliu. In honor of him my second kilt is a SWK standard leatherneck. I have worn this kilt severl times and have not gotten any bad comments. I quess when they see the USMC belt buckle and find out it is an USMC leatherneck tartan they may think a snide remark is not an option.
