Hello from North Texas.
New to Kilts. Been interested for a while.
Given that Clan Bell has just reformed in the last 20 some odd years and the Bell of the Borders tartan was a modern design. I was reluctant in spending the money on a proper tartan kilt until Clan Bell was officially recognized.
I started with what you would call one of the "tactical" kilts from 5.11 Tactical. Within a couple of weeks I was ready to progress further into the kilt culture.
Last week (after a little research) I took some old denim fabric I had laying around from a previous project and tried my had and making a more proper kilt with proper pleats.
I think it turned out okay given that I didn't have a pattern. It did draw up about a little so it doesn't hit me mid-knee anymore.

I ordered "The Art of Kiltmaking" so hopefully I do a lot better on my next one.
