Hello from Pennsylvania
Hello,
I'm happy to have finally joined this forum although I have been lurking it for several months. I've been wearing kilts for a while now; at home and out with friends I wear my black watch tartan, and even when working my forge where I just where an olive drab amerikilt with leather plating I made to protect the cloth from sparks and white hot metal. I just recently, roughly 2 weeks ago, bought a new PV kilt from USA Kilts in their Douglas Ancient tartan. Introduction aside I do have a question for you gentlemen. Towards the end of October, the 28th to be specific I am going to the Pennsylvania Renaissance Fairewith some friends and traditionally many people, more specifically attendees not participants and volunteers, wear costumes the last weekend as it is so close to Halloween. Would it be acceptable to wear a Jacobite style outfit or should I just stick with my great kilt?

As for your question, I don't consider the kilt a costume but an everyday garment to wear. I did wear my kilt to the local ren-fest here but it was as I normally wear it...polo shirt, kilt, hose, sgian dubh (which the bloody varmints made me put at the will call booth), and a nice day sporran. I did see a lot of normal kilted men and some who wore the kilt as a costume. It's a personal preference what and how you wear it, that's what makes the kilt so great...versatility.
As you may know or will find out, most on this forum will say "do what you feel is best" or "do what makes you happy". I do wish you many happy readings and hearty howdy.

Ah yes, I apologize if I offended, I do not wear it as a costume either, that being said I am not talking about wearing as street wear I am talking about wearing it as a costume for this occasion and my first attempt to be dress as period accurate to Jacobite as I can with kilt, a period accurate shirt, some cheep leather shoes I made, and a Jacobite swordsman's vest. That's really a shame about the sgian dubh though, it would be like having to give up your pocket knife! Thank you for the feedback.

Another greeting from south central Pennsylvania!
Wear what you feel comfortable in - that is the whole purpose of wearing a kilt to begin with.
