Hello from South of the Border
Hello,
I am a 4th generation Englishman. My great great grandfather in the direct male line was a Scot from Cramond in Midlothian who "emigrated" to England about 1810 to 1815.
The Masons of Midlothian are a sept of the Sinclair Clan.
I now have a Sinclair tartan kilt and, though an Englishman, am proud of my Scottish heritage. I will be wearing the kilt publicly for the first time on New Year's Eve.
How do Scotsmen in Scotland feel about people such as me wearing the kilt? I have been told that if I were to wear it in Scotland it might cause offence to the Scots. Any thoughts?
John Mason.

from the Scottish Borders.
I'd be very disappointed if anyone took offence at your wearing a kilt when you visit Scotland.
Most Scotsmen I know own a kilt but only wear it on special occasions which makes me as an everyday kilt wearer more of an exception.
I live in Scotland, close to the English Border and I am 75% Scottish and 25% Irish.
There is a myth here that a man in a kilt is probably an American, particularly if wearing one of the cheaper quality kilts sold in the tourist shops - simply because we see so many people of Scots descent travelling here on holiday to discover their roots. At the start of their holiday they may buy a cheap kilt in one of the tourist shops and wear it throughout their holiday. It is a myth though, as I have probably met more Englishmen wearing kilts than Americans!
Do come and tour Scotland in your kilt and be sure to meet up with some of the Scottish x-markers while you are here.

Welcome from the desert southwest of America. Thought at first you might have been talking about south of our border. Everyone can wear a kilt, so go for it.
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…
