Hello from a tiny hamlet in northern Granada, Spain!!
I am a Cuban-American with surprise Scottish heritage, living in the province of Granada, Spain.
I would like to know as much as possible about the dos and don'ts of kilts and Scottish wear.

Well met Ely. Don't worry so much that you will do something wrong. Get a kilt that fits your needs and tastes (family tartan if applies, regional tartan, utility kilt, universal design, etc). Next, put together an ensemble that fits you and the circumstances where you will wear your kilt (hiking, parties, casual town wear, etc). Post photos or descriptions of your choices for examination with us if you want to get feedback. This is not required, but folks normally find useful tidbits from the XMark group.
Wear your kilt with confidence, as this gets better responses from the public. Glad to have you with us.
Welcome Esther. Saw the post with your name.

Welcome. Is Ely a first name or last name?
American by birth, human by coincidence and earthling by mistake.

Ely is my great, great grandmother's last name.
Lost in the folds of time, I thought it fitting to honor her this way.
My real name is Esther

I have a great great X that was from Scotland, born in 1688. He must have moved to Cambridge as the Ely's were from there with his progeny on. I wish I could find out more about that line. The other Scots in my background are Scott and Anderson, but there's a lot of English and some Irish and I wouldn't be surprised if there was Welsh. That English line ended at Deacon with my Great Grandmother.

I'd say these are my top things:
- Wear kilts as much as you can ; )
- bottom of the kilt reaching mid-knee
- kilt pin on the corner (not pinning the 2 layers together - just on the top flap/ apron)
- wear formal shoes or hiking shoes/ hiking boots
- long socks/ hose
- find out what tartan you're wearing if people ask
- wear a sporran
- if wearing a jacket - try get one as short as possible to show off the kilt
- quick edit - if someone asks you what's under there - collect creative ways to make a joke and avoid answering/ never tell anyone; if you want you can let a select few have a look/ feel - hehehe~
everything else is a minor thing to worry about ~

This is a copy paste from the info I got from my geneology buff cousin:
Jose Joaquín Navarro Villar y Portuondo (b. 1836) our great, great grandfather, father of Angel Navarro. After graduating from San Basilio el Magno Seminary with a degree of Philosophy and Latin, traveled to New York and enrolled in New York Medical College & Charity Hospital obtaining a degree of Medical Doctor and Surgeon. He also graduated from Universidad de La Habana with a Homeopathy degree.
While in New York, he met a Scottish immigrant by the name of Catherine Louise Ely and MacDonald . Her parents were born in the island of Islay in Scotland, they married two times in the same day (Episcopal and Catholic churches in New York City.) She converted to Catholicism.
They moved to Santiago and had a bunch of children, they mostly died very young.
I remember two of their daughters: our grand aunts, Theresa (Tero) and Elizabeth (Bessie) they looked like Miss Marple from Agatha Christie, and both remained single - there was also the legendary brother Ricardo (I have a great photo), dilettante, inventor, clubman, an eccentric character indeed. There was another daughter can’t remember the name now, she was sailing to Spain to get married and while standing on deck, a sailor fell from the mainsail lookout (el carajo) and killed her. She was thrown overboard.
I don't think she has anything before that, but I can try and find out.
