Hey everyone!
how are you all doing? I recently got the genealogy bug and was able to trace my ancestors back to the people that came from Scotland through Ireland, and on to Virginia. This all started about 3 months ago and has lighted a fire under my rear end like crazy. Since then I have learned that I am part of Clan Irwin, via Irving of Drum. Currently I know just enough to be dangerous but I want to learn as much as I can. I have spoken to people within the clan and will be having my first kilt made for me within the next month or so for use at my wedding in march. As I am new to this whole clans and kilts world I would love any and all information that you would be willing to give, and please (in the beginning) forgive my ignorance!! I currently live in northern California but will be moving to Alaska in April.
I look forward to conversing and learning from you all!
-Mike

Hello Mike I lve in Cornwall UK. My Scottish ancestors left Scotland ,probably in !600's at the same time another Scottish ex pat was born in Yorkshire . He became a famous mariner. He was involved in the navigation of the St Lawence River for the British assalt on Quibec.
His son Captain John Cook was drowned in Poole Harbour in 1725.
My family were sea traders out of Poole harbour in Dorset. worked Baltic. Probably Grand Banks,Nova Scotia. Probably France, Spain ,Portugal
Salt Cod Carriers. May have gone into Med to Greece, Cyprus ,Turkey, Egypt.
Granny Cook married a London Irish Tailor. My mother married a third generation Powell who had lived in London an had lived with his
Father in the Purbec's .
Why did I go to Inverness To buy a Kilt which I wore for thirty years dancing with the Scots who left the Clyde to work on Portland.
The Scots Irish and Welsh And Italians moved in and out of Cornwall.
The whole thing is Complicated. Post me your story, It might lock into my reaserch.
Wear your Kilt with Pride. Wear it every day and make sure you look smart. People will come up to you and say "You look smart .Where are you from"....... Roderick.

Well met Mike. The (find your roots bug) is contagious and thrilling. We all were beginners once and many, like me, jumped in like a kitten chasing grasshoppers. Take the excitement along with you on the ride, a few of us will catch a lift and journey with you sometime. Welcome.
