Hi Folks!
It's a pleasure to be here. I intend to soak up as much knowledge as you all can spare - and from persusing the forums so far it seems like that may take me a while! I don't have my kilt yet but that's not even the initial reason I came to XMarks. In anticipation of getting my first kilt I got a hankering to be a creative part of the outfit so I started researching how to make a sporran. It was from a leather working forum that I got a link to here with glowing reviews of some fine leather crafters in residence. I can't wait to dive in and learn more about both kilts and sporrans and all the other fun stuff that goes with the whole experience of my heritage.
Thanks in advance and sorry in advance for the million dumb questions I expect to ask...although I am just experienced enough at forums to know that the search tool is my friend. I promise to use it in good faith.
Cheers!
HL

Hello HL,
Welcome to XMarks from the other side of the Atlantic in Norfolk, England.
You might want to look at Tandy Leather Factory. They sell handbag kits - everything you need to make and finish a handbag. Not the same I know, but it will give you some structure to your practising, before you start on a sporran.

Yessir - I've been viewing all their videos for the last couple days and I found out they have a store right in my city. lol, at first my wife was all "Whaaaat? Another hobby that needs tools and equipment?" but then she was all "Oh, you could maybe make a handbag? Well that's different..." and she went off on her own google search for peacock patterns to tool into leather...she loves peacocks.
I've also found a fellow named Ian Atkinson who has a lot of informative youtube videos on leather working...As with most new interests, there'a probably a life-time and more of information out there to be had..but at least between XMarks and the leather forums I'll at least have a great place to make sure I'm not screwing up too badly!
