Hi from Michigan!
I live on a small hobby farm in lower MI. We raise lots of heritage livestock and some day I'm thinking about a few highland cattle. I'm an artist and been married to a great guy for the last 20 yrs.
My family's names were as far as we can tell, accepted by the MacDonald clan so we have opted for the ancient tartan... not sure if we're allowed to do that since we are totally new to this. My names are McCuistion (Maternal, very few of us), Watson (paternal) and I'm married to a Hutchison. They all seem to fall under MacDonald except for Watson... Still learning etiquette so feel free to help me out here. Do I follow my moms colors or my dads... or hubbys?
I've been "kindly suggesting" to my hubby that he might enjoy wearing a kilt. (and yes, I would enjoy seeing him in one too) I think he could handle it, but I think he may opt for a black utilikilt to get started! Either color or black I don't care. I'm not trying to pressure him, I've just planted a few seeds and he's been looking.
I came here to seek info from gentlemen like yourselves to help him or help me with whats proper.
Thank you !
Wendy

Welcome, from Inverness-shire. Do you have any Hereford cattle?

Hi Wendy, and welcome to X Marks from Delaware.
You are just fine with the MacDonald ancient tartan (no rules broken, HA). I believe that wives typically wear their husbands clan tartan. However, my wife generally wears a Stewart tartan (all but one of her kilts are Stewart), as she has been doing since she was wee little. Stewart is her maiden family clan.
Continue to encourage your husband but don't push him; be patient. My wife worked on me several years before I was willing to wear a kilt but, once I did put one on, there was no turning back.
As far as what's proper... well there are some rules and there are guidelines and you will find them all here but, don't let them deter you. Your interest in your cultural heritage will guide you and you will find all the information you will need to do it right, here on XMTS.

Hi Wendy, from sunny Queensland!
I think we all understand the concept of "kindly suggesting" - good luck! I don't know if you have Renaissance Faires in Michigan but that might be a good way to reinforce the suggestion, there are usually lots of kilts on show at such events, and sales stalls where he could perhaps give it a try?
Regards, Sav.
