    Hi from New Zealand

Hello all. I'm Dutch on my father's side and English/Scottish on my mother's. I'm particularly interested in trying to find out more information about my Scottish side - particularly the Grants. Attached is a photo of my great great grandfather John Peter Grant from Perthshire (born 1842), who is wearing a rather wonderful kilt - I'm not sure whether this is a ceremonial kilt or one that denotes his post. Can anyone shed some light on this?

I hope you don't mind. I corrected your photo image tags so the photo would show.

When you post photos from photobucket, use the img code instead of the HTML code.

Further info just come to hand which may help...

Just been told that documentation has been found that John Grant was 18 years old when he inlisted with the "79th Regiment of Foot" on the 15th Day of December 1859. His Service number was : 639. He apparently spent most of the 10 years abroad. Discharge of Horse Guards at Stirling Castle on the 5th Day of January 1869.

Does this connect to the kilt he is wearing, i.e. some sort of ceremonial uniform maybe?

Well, I see a set of pipes on the chair beside him. So unless that was some sort of set dressing for the camera shot, I'd venture a guess that this is what the regimental pipers wore as full parade uniform. I believe that the 79th was also known as The Cameron Highlanders from their inception in the late 1700's. They were stationed in India from 1851 through 1871 when they were redeployed to Gibraltar. You may be interested in knowing that in 1873 Queen Victory directed that they were to be known as Queen's Own, and the green facings on the uniforms were replaced with royal blue facings, right in the middle of your 2x great grandfather's tour of duty.

They do have a rather long and noble history. You should be proud to have such an illustrious ancestor.

Hey thanks Scotfree - really helpful! Yes, I've been doing a bit of research - started with the glengarrie and discovered that the style with the black cock feathers and no dicing was adopted by the Cameron Highlanders Pipers - so I think you're right - he may have been a musician! Also that tartan looks like a good fit to the one he's wearing as well. Thanks again!
