how ought i to wear modern kilt to Celtic festival?
Hello,
I am wearing a modern kilt (first time wearing a kilt ever) to a Celtic Festival this weekend (Pikes Peak) in Colorado Springs. I have the sash and badge but, not the rest of "proper" attire. Wasn't wanting to go full tilt as it will be in the 90's outdoors. I am a spectator, not participant.
My real question is, would I wear the sash , even tho I am probably wearing a tank top with my kilt.
just curious, don't want to do wrong thing.
thanks,
Celtic Farm Girl

People are going to be wearing a variety of outfits there. A sash seems kind of formal for a tanktop and modern kilt so if you think you'll be too hot why bother? Just make sure to wear comfy shoes for the day.

My advice would be - If you are wearing a modern kilt - particularly a solid colored one - leave all the other "Scottish" stuff at home. The modern kilts are not Scottish and are not worn the same way a Tartan kilt would be worn.

Here are my two cents worth. If you take a sash, you might want to consider (as derosa comments) it may be too hot for the extra material. However, if you will need a quick wrap for rain or cool snap of wind, the sash would be just the item. Consider the material for it's multiple uses, ie: head scarf to block the sun, ground covering for one's bottom, even a sack to carry things.
Lastly, does that sash make you look good? Some fabrics are just the touch needed for the style to be complete.

Just to confirm what Steve has advised. We in Scotland very rarely ever see a modern style non tartan kilt and in 70 something years I have only ever seen one close too and two maybe three more from a distance. I have never seen a lady wearing a tartan sash in the day, at an event(apart on rare occasion at a wedding) of some sort, unless they were some sort of official and even that is rare.
Remember please, that there are distinct differances of Scottish attire choices between Scotland and what happens in the rest of the world and many in Scotland would not recognise what is worn elsewhere and Steve is right to make you aware of it.

Hi Pamela and a warm welcome from sunny Queensland!
If by "modern kilt", you do indeed mean a utility style garmentt, then, as Steve says, a sash (assuming tartan) isn't really appropriate. And even with a Scottish style tartan kilt, as Jock says, a sash is usually worn, if at all, for more formal occasions.
Celtic festivals are really abour relaxing and having fun, for which casual dress is more appropriate, though you will likely see a few sashes on the re-enactors, particularly in the USA.
Regards, Sav.
