Howdy from Austin!
I'm a retired, 67 year old living in Round Rock, Texas near Austin.
I've never worn a kilt but have been wanting to for sometime. In the past weeks I've been reading a lot about them.
Austin is a very casual dress town and I like dressing well, so I'm often a bit over dressed - e.g. only one at the opera or a formal wedding in a tux. I'm known for my hats and, in the cooler months my bow ties.
I'm currently leaning towards the USA Kilts Casual Kilt for everyday use and since the town is so casual, the entry cost is low, and I can figure out how much I will wear it.
I was in the Army from 67 to 75 (active to 72 then active reserves) so I'm thinking of getting the US Army tartan.
I have a number of questions which I'll post in a thread on the Kilt Advice forum.

A warm Scottish welcome from middle England. In view of the current weather, make sure the kilt you choose is not too long. Nothing worse than a wet kilt slapping against the back of your calves. Hope you were there to enjoy the F1 race, definitely the most exciting of the season.
If you are going to do it, do it in a kilt!

Welcome to the forum from the 4th most boring town in Illinois!!
I really like the US Army tartan, I have a friend who has a kilt in that tartan. He has a fine sporran that was made to compliment the kilt as well.

Which sporran does he have?

It was made for him by a local craftsman, the leather was dyed to pair with the kilt, it's a rob Roy style sporran.

Welcome from Fredericksburg. You might want to check out the Scottish Games in Salado - Nov 13 & 14. There are usually several X-markers there, clan tents and several vendors. All in all a pretty good event.
