Howdy from southeastern Ohio
Hi, Folks,
I just joined this group, as I've been infected (in a good way) with the desperate need to learn about Scottish culture and historic traditions, dress, and so forth. And KILTS, of course. Have gotten a little ways into genealogical work on my mongrel past, being one of a long line of "hillbillies"...and so far it looks pretty certain my roots harken back to the UK but not necessarily to Scotland, more's the pity. I might have a few drops of Scot blood in me. In an unusual fit of traditionalism, I've opted to save my money for an inexpensive-priced custom-made kilt from Scotland, and have taken liberties claiming (with no legitimate right) the option of using a Stewart tartan based on my partner's "Stuart" lineage from the Nethybridge area. Oh well, I like the sett!
But, I've held a fascination with kilts for a long time. Now that I'm too damn old to care what anybody likes about my dress, and have been given an enthusiastic "go ahead" from my boss (who informed me he belongs to Clan Campbell and has his grandfather's highland outfit to wear on our "kilt days"!), I've bought my first kilt after quite a bit of homework and soul-searching.
Now I'm desperately waiting for its arrival--a 13 oz wool, casual kilt from Scotweb. It's totally easy to see why somebody would call this an addiction. I haven't even gotten my first one or worn it yet, and I'm already fantasizing getting tartan fabric and trying to make my own. (Yeah, I sent off for "The Art of Kiltmaking" and have found some distributors of decently priced tartan wool fabrics already.) Damn. I gotta slow down or I won't have Christmas money for anybody else!
Anyhow, this is an unnecessarily long email. Thrilled to be a part o' this site, and eager to make friends with other kiltwearers in Ohio and elsewhere. I'm enjoying reading the comments on various threads and learning alot, as well as feeling a bit akin to a bunch of fine people such as yourselves.
Best,
Harvey
